The Maine Coon
Maine Coon is America's own native longhair; it is originally from New
England area in the northeastern U.S. state of Maine here, as the cat
takes its name from. The cats were popular back in the 1800s, where
they lived as farm dogs and were valued for their skills as
musefængere.
The cold climate helped to develop the robust cat with its unique coat
texture, and today's breeders are trying to continue to preserve the
breed's characteristics. Nearly all colors are accepted, so there's a
Maine Coon for almost every taste.
Breed was recognized in Europe in the mid 1980s and since then its
popularity has exploded. It is today the most popular pedigree breed in
Denmark and Germany, and in our neighboring Nordic countries are also
steadily increasing popularity.
Appearance
Maine Coon cat is a large, sturdy cat with a rectangular body shape and
shaggy, silky coat with unequal wings. It has strong legs, large paws,
broad shoulders and a long tail with long, waving hair.
The head is wedge-shaped, medium in size, slightly longer than it is
wide and in balance with the body.
There are significant differences between females and males, the
females usually weigh approx. 4-6 kg and is more feminine of the
building, while males weigh approx. 6-9 pounds and is wider and coarser
built.
face has high cheekbones highlighted and you can see and feel a clear
transition to the muzzle, which is square in outline in front, with a
chin that is sufficiently deep and wide to complete the impression of a
square. The profile represents a soft bow down to the nose, which is
completely straight, no dents, bumps or "eagle nose".
The ears are large and pointed, much like with tufts (it's the little
"brushes" on the tips of ears). The ears sit high on the cat's head and
pointing straight forward. The eyes are slightly oval, and they must
work round when they are wide open, they give the cat an alert
expression.
The overall impression of the strong, bright cat is described by one of
pioneers of the breed: "A Maine Coon is a cat, as you can imagine come
running at dusk with a squirrel in his mouth. "
Temperament
Many people fall into the first lap of the race looks impressive, but
its amazing temperament, which has ensured its enormous popularity. One
Maine Coon is simply not enough! Maine Coons are social, good-natured
and clumsy cats who love to participate in family activities.
Equally harsh they seem, just as gentle they are. They are suitable as
a rule not to a life as enekatte, but prefer to have company - most
adapts well both with conspecifics, with dogs and other pets.
But although they are happy to company, so it is not a cat that hangs
on his people all the time. Instead, they choose to "hang out" near
their humans to see if there is anything they can "help" with. As the
Americans say it: "A Maine Coon blir your companion, your buddy, your
pal."
Many Maine Coon cats can learn to retrieve small balls or tøjmus, and
they retain playful throughout their lives.
They evolve slowly, one can assume that the skeleton is grown in height
and length at 12-18 months of age, but developed muscle mass and width
until the cat is 3-4 years old. Maine Coons are often very talkative,
but their tiny pipe voices and distinctive coo sounds do not match the
rugged exterior.
Special needs
Maine Coon cat is a semilanghårskat and one should therefore be
prepared that it requires grooming.
It varies from cat to cat, how much is required, but you should not buy
a Maine Coon, if you do not is prepared to explain the coat thoroughly
approx. once a week, and perhaps more frequently in the trap over
time.
It may also be necessary to trim klospidserne once in a while.
A Maine Coon can easily thrive as indoor cat if it only has corporate
and leisure opportunities indoors .
it also keeps from having access to the outdoors whenever possible.
Here, however as the owner be aware that many cats do not lend
themselves to run freely without doors, and many breeders will simply
require contractually that the cat be kept under secure conditions.
There are many dangers threatens the free-running cat, and with such a
popular breed like Maine Coon is always a risk that the cat is simply
being stolen! They are so confident that they walk with anybody home.
